Lee

My name is Lee Charnock and I have recently joined the Falmouth Marine School teaching team after working within another campus of The Cornwall College Group. I teach on the Level 3 Marine Biology and Ecology course covering several units.

I have lived in Cornwall my whole life and have been lucky enough to study and then gain jobs in my sector in this incredible country. A former student of Cornwall College, I graduated in 2012 with a BSc in Applied Zoology and upon graduating I worked for a number of years at Blue Reef Aquarium in Newquay as an aquarist. An amazing role which had me working with a huge variety of aquatic creatures but also experiencing other aspects away from the animals such as appearing on TV, radio and dressing a film set. Upon leaving the aquarium I moved into teaching back in 2014 and have worked for The Cornwall College Group ever since. I currently teach across 2 of our campuses in both an FE and HE role, these vary from understanding water quality through to health and welfare of animals.

In my spare time I can either be seen knee deep in a rock pool or down on the allotment immersing myself in the magic that is outdoors. My other major hobby is fish keeping and tending to the needs of my other pets.

From Spring through to Autumn, I am heavily involved with the Newquay Marine Group and organise and run their rock pool rambles, this is deeply rewarding to show people the wonders that can be seen within a few meters from the beach. When times align, I will also partake in the Cornwall Wildlife Trusts Shoresearch events.

Aspirations for next year include getting more people to engage with their local rocky shore as well as equipping future students to become employer ready. Having experienced what is needed and required within the aquatics industry it’s enabled me to utilise these skills and encourage those of tomorrow.

I am looking forward to meeting the new students to the Falmouth Marine School that will join us after the Summer holidays
