Subject: Freestyle in Medley Events

The British Swimming - Swimming Officials Group are aware of information and videos available online relating the breaststroke to freestyle turn performed by Ryan Lochte in the 200m Individual Medley at the 2015 World Championships.  Lochte, having touched at the end of the breaststroke leg, pushes off the wall and performs multiple butterfly leg kicks on his back before turning onto his breast before breaking the surface of the water.

As is often the case what is seen on an underwater TV camera may not have been seen by a deck official.

At this time British Swimming have not been notified by FINA of any changes to SW5.1 : Freestyle means that in any event so designated  the swimmer may swim any style, except that in Individual or Medley Relay events, freestyle means any style other than backstroke, breaststroke or butterfly.

Should we be notified of any rules changes they will be circulated throughout the sport.
